Kids “Dig” Careers Under Construction

2009 Construction Day

Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center (CWCTC), in conjunction with the Westmoreland-Fayette WIB and the Westmoreland-Fayette Building and Industry Partnership, hosted the third Careers Under Construction Event at CWCTC on April 22nd. Ninety-five students and their chaperones from nine of CWCTC’s sending middle schools explored the school’s construction shops, participated in hands-on activities and listened to presentations from members of the building and construction industry.

Each group of students was able to tour several construction shops and try their hands at activities with the aid of CWCTC’s students. The Building Trades, Carpentry, Trowel Trades, Drafting, Plumbing, HVAC, Painting and Decorating, Electrical and Powerline shops each provided students with insight into what it’s like to attend a career and technology center as well as what types of jobs are available in those fields. Industry representatives from Allegheny Energy, the Utility Workers Union of America #102, CH&D Enterprises, W PA Operating Engineers JAT Program, the Builders Guild of W PA, the International Union of Operating Engineers #95, and Triangle Tech shared their knowledge of building and construction trades with the 7th and 8th graders.

CWCTC, the Westmoreland-Fayette WIB and the Westmoreland-Fayette Building and Construction Industry Partnership will also host a weeklong Construction Camp for students this June 15-19. This will be the school’s third Construction Camp! The camp was so successful that it was also run at Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center last year. In addition to CWCTC and EWCTC, Construction Camp for 7th and 8th graders will expand to Northern Westmoreland CTC this summer. EWCTC and NWCTC’s camps will be held the week of June 8th. Registration is $25, but may be waived under extenuating circumstances. For more information on any of the camps, please contact Heidi Petrosky at petroskyh@wccc.edu or 724-925-4247.
